Check out our Teams of the Decades!
It was the Fall of 1964...
 |
Dick Smith
President 65-72 |
...and the City of Chicago Rugby Football Club had
been playing for about a year by the time Dick Smith joined in the fall of 1964. A
young lawyer from the University of Virginia named William "Hawk" Walker,
along with Mike Bansley, Peter Boland, Sandy Campbell, Terry Ellis, Pat Halperin (who
still turned out for the Lions in 2002) and George Kearney, had formed the initial
team and were getting beating regularly by 40 to 50 points by rivals such as the University
of Illinois and the University of Chicago.
Dick then initiated some major player recruitment in the spring of 1965 and established
a tradition that would stay with the club to the present day"interesting
characters" such as John Bellino, David Blears, Mike Flahive, John Rood and Bill
"Thunder" Thornton were all recruited and formed the core of what was to
become the Chicago Lions.
The Lion stirs...

J "Tyke"
Nollman
President 76-78 and 79-83 |
The club adopted the name in recognition of the the pair of "Colossal Lions"
(sculpted by Edward Kemeys in 1873) which now stand outside the Art Institute on Michigan
Avenue. John Bellino played for The Chicago Spiders and the club had to fight to get
the Lions name.
As a gesture of goodwill to any visiting team that the Lions play, they are presented
with a bronze replica of one of the lions (they are different), the idea being that
the second lion is given to that team when the club visits them in their home country.
It can obviously work the other way when the Chicago Lions visit a team abroad for
the first time. To date, there have been over 50 teams honored with this tradition
including Northampton RFC of England, Wrexham RFC of Wales, Melrose RFC of Scotland,
Greystones RFC and Ballina RFC of Eire, and Omagh Academicals of Northern Ireland
in 2002.

The Purchase of the Clubhouse
Ed Kane was the major force behind the purchase of the "School Street Clubhouse"
located at 1801 West School Street on the north side of the city in 1981. Until the
Lions opened the North Park
Tap in December of 2000 at 313 West North Avenue, this served as the focal point
for all socializing, entertaining and reception place for the club for many years.
It still serves as a home to players and coaches who need accommodation when arriving
in Chicago, as there are now a number of one and two-bedroom apartments in the building.
The bar is, sadly, no more but the memories are still there from many a great evening!
The acquisition of the North Park Tap has been a great step forward for the Chicago
Lions in both the rugby community and the City of Chicago.

Legendary Captain |
The traditional playing strip changed for two years in 1998 for the first time
since 1964 with the advent of the National Super League, but have since returned
to the original design, and are from the great New Zealand
All Blacks team with all black with white collar and 2 white hoops atop the
socks. The Super League shirt had a black and white design, the shorts and socks
remained the same.
The Chicago Lions have won 16 Midwest Championships, starting in 1966 with the
first Mid-America Cup, in 1967 with the second, culminating 32 years later in 1999
with it's last one. The Cup was disbanded in 2000.
There are plans afoot in the Midwest to bring back the Mid-America Cup tournament
for 2004.
Today's Mane News
The Chicago Lions have traveled a long way since 1964.
Now in it's 44th year, the A side is traveling to such
cities as Washington DC, Denver, Los Angeles, Kansas,
Boston and New York, to participate in the National
Super League.
The club has also relocated to the new home field in
the city at Northeastern Illinois University.

We currently have four players on the national team
roster, a testament to the players themselves and the club adminsitration that supports
them.
The Super League record of the Lions has improved in virtually
every year we have participated and the last two years we
have been semi-finalists.
The Chicago Lions are a very proud club with a great
history and pride themselves on being the forerunner
in much that is happening in US Rugby today. With the
advent of the Super League and the ever-growing list
of foreign sides wanting to come to the Windy City to
play the Lions, this means that as the competition
continues to get tougher, the support that the club
needs and invariably gets from it's members in order
to compete in an increasingly pressurized calendar
will eventually lead to the top and a National Super
League Championship.
Teams of the Decades
In 2000, we did an online survey to try and find the All-time
Greatest Chicago Lions team. This did not work because (1) it was an Internet-based
survey and therefore would ignore older players who were just as good as current
players, (2) there have been too many good players to choose the best, and (3) it
was ignoring people who contributed to the club over a longer period of time.
Therefore, we have created certificates that honored players in general, peopl
ewho made significant contributions to the Chicago Lions.
They are in PDF format which means you need to download the free
Acrobat Reader plug-in to view and print them.
