Founded in 1964, the Chicago Lions are one of the Midwest’s most historic and accomplished rugby clubs. With nearly six decades of tradition, we’ve built an inclusive environment that welcomes women and girls of all ages. Training takes place at the Lions for Hope Sports Complex, a premier facility in Chicago’s Near West Side. How to Join - What it Takes

Joining the Chicago Lions women’s rugby program is straightforward and welcoming. We know every player arrives with different goals, backgrounds, and levels of experience—and we’re here to meet you where you are. Whether you’re brand new to the sport, returning after a break, or looking for a competitive club to take your game further, there’s a place for you here.

Our program is built around development and community. Coaches focus on helping each athlete improve technically, mentally, and physically while supporting a team-first culture. You’ll learn the fundamentals, build confidence, and train in an environment that values both hard work and camaraderie.

With opportunities to play 7s in the summer and XVs in the spring and fall, there’s always a chance to get involved. We encourage players to attend an open training session or reach out directly to our recruiting team to learn more about where they fit best. Step into a tradition of excellence, make lifelong connections, and discover the pride of being part of Chicago’s premier women’s rugby club.

  • When you join the Chicago Lions, you’re stepping into a competitive yet supportive environment. New players are introduced gradually, learning core skills before advancing to contact drills and match play. Practices focus on technique, conditioning, and strategy—and every session is designed to make you better.

    Training typically takes place two to three times per week at the Lions for Hope Sports Complex, with weekend matches or tournaments depending on the season. Attendance is flexible but commitment matters; consistent participation builds chemistry, sharpens skills, and helps the team succeed.

  • You’ll need cleats, a mouthguard, and athletic clothing suitable for outdoor training. Once registered, players receive official Lions training gear and have the option to purchase team apparel. All other equipment—balls, cones, pads, and game-day uniforms—is provided by the club.

    Players are encouraged to bring water, a positive attitude, and a willingness to learn. Rugby is demanding, but it’s also incredibly rewarding—and the Lions make sure every athlete feels supported along the way.

  • Are you interested in joining our women's rugby club in Chicago? If so, sign up now by submitting your information through our contact form. From there, our recruiters will contact you with the next steps to getting involved with the team.

  • Our Women's rugby club has its training and plays its home matches at the Lions for Hope Sports Complex. Opened in 2019, this top-of-the-line sports complex is located at 2637 W Polk St in Chicago, IL 60612 and includes a full-size 5G turf field, two locker rooms, and a community/weightlifting room. Through its superior resources, the Lions for Hope Sports Complex equips our athletes with all of the essential tools necessary to improve upon their individual skills and aim for greater on-the-field success.

  • Our Chicago Women's rugby teams are a part of the Midwest Rugby Football Union, which administers and controls rugby play throughout the Midwest. Our senior 15's team plays in the Midwest Rugby Premiership, and our Sevens program takes part in the Midwest 7's series. This allows us to compete in the highest level of amateur rugby available in the Midwest.

  • Of course! Our women's rugby club in Chicago welcomes individuals of all experience levels, including those who are entirely new to the sport. Whether you're taking your first steps on the rugby field or are a seasoned athlete, our team is committed to providing the necessary coaching and support to help you learn and grow. We believe in fostering an inclusive environment where everyone can thrive, regardless of their prior rugby experience.

  • Generally, we invite players aged 18 and older to join our senior Women's rugby team. However, we also have youth and junior programs tailored to younger players. If you or someone you know falls into this category, please don't hesitate to contact us for detailed information about age-specific teams and available programs. Our ladies' rugby team is dedicated to accommodating a wide range of age groups and ensuring that rugby is accessible to all.

  • Our team's practice schedule is designed to align with the demands of each season. Typically, we hold regular practices throughout the week and have games on the weekends. Upon joining our team, you'll receive specific details about practice and game schedules. We aim to provide a well-balanced training and competition schedule experience for all our players.

  • Our Chicago Women's rugby team actively participates in local and regional competitions, which may necessitate travel. The travel distance can vary depending on the location of specific games or tournaments. Our women's rugby club will travel throughout the Midwest for conference matches. Rest assured, we make every effort to facilitate travel logistics for away games, including organizing carpooling arrangements and assisting with accommodations. Your convenience and enjoyment of the game are essential to us!
