How to Join - What it Takes
Joining the Chicago Lions women’s rugby program is straightforward and welcoming. We know every player arrives with different goals, backgrounds, and levels of experience—and we’re here to meet you where you are. Whether you’re brand new to the sport, returning after a break, or looking for a competitive club to take your game further, there’s a place for you here.
Our program is built around development and community. Coaches focus on helping each athlete improve technically, mentally, and physically while supporting a team-first culture. You’ll learn the fundamentals, build confidence, and train in an environment that values both hard work and camaraderie.
With opportunities to play 7s in the summer and XVs in the spring and fall, there’s always a chance to get involved. When you join the Chicago Lions, you’re stepping into a competitive yet supportive environment. New players are introduced gradually, learning core skills before advancing to contact drills and match play. Practices focus on technique, conditioning, and strategy—and every session is designed to make you better.
Training typically takes place two to three times per week at the Lions for Hope Sports Complex, with weekend matches or tournaments depending on the season. Attendance is flexible but commitment matters; consistent participation builds chemistry, sharpens skills, and helps the team succeed.

You’ll need cleats, a mouthguard, and athletic clothing suitable for outdoor training. Once registered, players receive official Lions training gear and have the option to purchase team apparel. All other equipment—balls, cones, pads, and game-day uniforms—is provided by the club.
Players are encouraged to bring water, a positive attitude, and a willingness to learn. Rugby is demanding, but it’s also incredibly rewarding—and the Lions make sure every athlete feels supported along the way.

Our Women's rugby club has its training and plays its home matches at the Lions for Hope Sports Complex. Opened in 2019, this top-of-the-line sports complex is located at 2637 W Polk St in Chicago, IL 60612 and includes a full-size 5G turf field, two locker rooms, and a community/weightlifting room. Through its superior resources, the Lions for Hope Sports Complex equips our athletes with all of the essential tools necessary to improve upon their individual skills and aim for greater on-the-field success.

Our Chicago Women's rugby teams are a part of the Midwest Rugby Football Union, which administers and controls rugby play throughout the Midwest. Our senior 15's team plays in the Midwest Rugby Premiership, and our Sevens program takes part in the Midwest 7's series. This allows us to compete in the highest level of amateur rugby available in the Midwest.
